Join us in Sumatra, Indonesia for a photographic journey to support the Nuraga Bhumi Institute’s all-female Indigenous ranger team with exclusive access to the all-Indigenous female patrol team. Explore the jungle with the team, encountering wild orangutan and other species. Document everything and become more knowledgeable about how Indigenous communities practice conservation.

Day 1:

Selamat datang! Fly into Medan, Sumatra, Indonesia on November 18 and be greeted by our staff. Get settled in your hotel and relax.

Day 2:

Start your journey learning about the Indonesian culture through storytelling. We will make our way around the city to set the context for this powerful story.

Day 3-9:

Spend your days in the forests and villages surrounding Bukit Lawang and the Gunung Leuser National Park, trekking alongside the all-female Indigenous patrol team to find evidence of tiger and wild orangutans…and bring all your images together to support the two local organizations we will be working alongside.

Day 11:

It’s time to say terima kasih and set off on your next adventure. Fly out of Medan November 28.

General notes:

  • Participants must be comfortable travellers with experience in photography or video-making and must be committed to sharing a completed set of images and/or video at the end of the Expedition with PWB and the community partner.

  • Our Ethical Storytelling Certification is a pre-requisite for Expeditions and is included in the cost of logistics and administration for those who are not yet certified.

  • Participants must be PWB Professional Members.

  • We will always prioritize the safety of our guests. All excursions are weather-permitting and are subject to change. Wildlife are never guaranteed.

  • Participants must be prepared for hot, humid conditions and hiking.
