GUEST:
Mariana Rivera is a biologist and conservation and underwater filmmaker and photographer from Colombia. Her work focuses on sharing stories that reflect the relationship between people and nature, and the efforts of local and indigenous communities to preserve their territories and cultures. Her work aims to create impactful stories which lead to creating tangible impacts for both the environment and for those who dedicate their lives to protecting it.
She is co-founder and co-director of Coral Studio, a conservation and underwater production company specialized in creating films to raise awareness on social-environmental issues. She is also Executive Officer for the Ecosystem Management Commission of the International Union for Conservation of Nature – IUCN. Her work includes feature documentaries, short film documentaries, music videos, tv and digital series, as well as impact campaigns for the Colombian Ocean Commission, Photographers Without Borders, National Parks of Colombia, Sony and National Geographic, among others.
Film Screening:
Reef People is a captivating documentary that draws a parallel between two unique places in Colombia: the Archipelago of San Andrés, Providencia, and Santa Catalina in the Caribbean, and the Gulf of Tribugá on the Pacific coast of the country. Through coral reefs, vast landscapes and stories of cultural heritage, the film reveals a crucial topic: the importance of local communities in decision-making and the protection of their territories. Reef People sheds light on the deep relationship between humans and the sea, the challenges faced by these communities, and serves as a powerful reminder of the vital role they play in preserving their environment, natural resources and traditions.
