On the Moku o Keawe, also known as Hawaiʻi
Island, there is a mountain called Mauna Kea. This
mauna is the piko (center) and pillar of Hawaiʻi,
while also being the tallest mountain in the world
from the seafloor to its summit. This sacred
mountain is the home to Hawaiian deities as well
as being a vital aquifer, fragile alpine ecosystem,
and vibrant landscape of Hawaiian cultural
practices and sites. This mauna has taught me the
importance of coming together as a community to
protect our sacred places and cultural traditions. It
is a pillar of strength for the people of Hawaiʻi and
has been a beacon of hope to people throughout
the Hawaiian Islands and around the world.
